(BOWIE, Md.) Saint Augustine's College held a double-digit lead in the second half, but Bowie State University recovered to record a 67-54 victory. The win improves Bowie State to 9-2 overall and unbeaten in the league at 4-0.
The first half featured three ties and five lead changes. Bowie State held a six point advantage twice in the first half, but Saint Augustine's strolled into halftime with a 30-27 lead.
Joel Kindred scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the first half for the visiting Falcons. Saint Augustine's (3-9 overall, 2-2 CIAA) extended the margin to 40-29 in the first four minutes of the second half before going ice cold. The Falcons made only two field goals the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs went on a 38-14 run in the final 16 minutes. The Bowie State backcourt duo of senior
Eric Vann (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, Prince George's C.C.) and junior
Darren Clark (Largo, MD, Largo, Lincoln University of Pennsylvania) sparked the Bulldogs during the run as they combined for 25 second half points.
Shaun Washum added 11 points for Saint Augustine's, who shot 21 percent (five for 24) in the second half. For the game, the Falcons made 30 percent of their shots. Kindred added a team-high nine rebounds for the Falcons.
Vann and Clark paced the Bulldogs with 19 points each and junior
Travis Hyman (Annapolis, MD, Old Mill, Anne Arundel C.C.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, blocked seven shots and added seven points. Sophomore
Byron Westmorland (Baltimore, MD, Mergenthaler, Baltimore City C.C.) chipped in 14 points.
BSU's Bulldogs hit the road for their next two games, traveling to Livingstone College – Tuesday (January 18th) and Johnson C. Smith University (January 20th). Bowie State returns to A.C. Jordan Arena – Saturday (January 22nd) to host the Hawks of Chowan at 7:30 pm.
