ANNAPOLIS, Md. (Dec. 2, 2014) - The Bowie State women's track and field team began the 2014-15 indoor season on Tuesday evening with a 10th place finish at the Lid Lifter Meet at Wesley Brown Field House, hosted by the Naval Academy.
COMPLETE RESULTSThe Lady Bears, who finished with a total of 1.5 points, had two top-10 finishers.
Senior
Kayla Watson (Bel Air, Md.) and freshman
Chelsea Harris (Rockville, Md.) claimed fourth place finishes in the long jump and high jump respectively. Watson gained one point for her long jump of 5.33m and Harris picked half a point with a high jump of 1.60m.
Host Navy won the team title with a total of 28.50 points, while Maryland Eastern Shore (24 points) came in second, followed by Georgetown (22 points). Towson and Robert Morris each scored 16 points to finish tied for fifth.
Harris placed 16th in the women's 60 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line with a time of 10.71 while Watson finished 29th in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.49.
Junior
Carissa Smith (Bloomfield, N.J.) was Bowie State final individual participant to finish in the top-10 of an event, placing 10th in the 60 meter hurdles, clocking in at 9.49.
Senior
Ayanna Tweedy (Richmond, Va.) was Bowie State's top finisher in the shot put, placing 15th with a throw of 11.04m. Freshman Savannah Kinlock also competed in the shot put and placed 31st overall with a throw of 8.45.
In addition to Watson's participation in the 60 meter dash, seniors
Crishonda Coffey (Richmond, Va.) and
Rayshawn Penn (Richmond, Va.) finished in 21st and 23rd place respectively with times of 8.24 and 8.29.
Coffey also competed in the women's long jump and came away with a 31st place finish (4.57m) while Penn finished 36th overall in the 200 meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 28.06.
Junior
Shahirah Johnson (Damascus, Md.) was Bowie State's lone participant in the weight throw and finished in 29th place with a heave of 8.29m.
The Bowie State "A" 4x400 meter relay team placed 14th overall with a time of 4:41.39.
Bowie State women's track and field returns to competition on Saturday (January 10th) at the George Mason University – Father Diamond Invitational.
