Johnson Named CIAA Rookie of the Year; Four Named All-Conference

BOWIE, MD --- The Bowie State women's volleyball team had four student-athletes earn All-Conference honors announced by the league office Friday evening during the conference awards banquet on the campus of Bowie State University. Freshman defensive specialist and libero Taylor Johnson was named the Central Intercolleigate Athletic Association (CIAA) Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team and All-Conference Second Team.

Joining Johnson on the All-Rookie Team was setter Trinity Loundmon while middle blocker Nina Edwards and right side hitter Nicole Taylor tabbed All-Conference First Team honors.

Johnson was  named the CIAA Volleyball Rookie of the Week four times this season. Johnson is one of the best all around players on the Bulldogs team and in the CIAA this season,  the Severn, Md., native led Bowie State in digs (368) which is seventh in the CIAA, while tallying 28 service aces, 28 assists and 55 kills through 102 sets played this season. Additionally, Johnson recorded double digits in digs 17 games including six matches with at least 20 digs. Her career high in digs is 27 vs. Virginia Union. 
 
In her freshman debut, Loundmon has recorded 359 assists which is a team-best while she is fourth on the team in service aces with 18. Season highs for Loundmon include six kills vs. ECSU, 24 assists vs. ECSU, seven points vs. ECSU, four service aces vs. Livingstone, 15 digs vs. Fayetteville State and a block against Bluefield State this season. The Detroit, MI., native has recorded 17 matches in double figures in assists and two matches with at least 23 assists. Additionally, Loundmon tallied 158 digs including two matches in double digits. 
 

Edwards led Bowie State in kills (229), 287.5 points and blocks (85) this season. Those rankings are 10th and fifth in the CIAA, respectively. The Preseason All-CIAA honoree season high was 14 kills this season against Livingstone (18 points) and six blocks also against Livingstone. She has had six matches in double digits for kills while defensively, Edwards has recorded 13 matches with at least three blocks. 

A native of Bowie, Md., Taylor combined for 186 kills, 71 digs, 55 blocks and eight assists through 94 sets played this season for BSU. Taylor had season highs in the following: 16 kills vs. Virginia Union, (18.5 points) vs. VUU, eight digs vs. Bloomsburg and four blocks vs. Elizabeth City State. The grad student also charted three matches in double digit kills and has 18 matches with at least five kills this year. Additionally, Taylor has posted six matches with at least four digs and nine matches with at least three blocks. Taylor was second on the team in kills and blocks for 2024.

Bowie State concluded its 2024 campaign with a quarterfinal loss to the No. 1 seed Shaw on Tuesday, Nov. 19. The Bulldogs finished 10-20 overall and 7-8 in the CIAA under the leadership of Edric Poitier.
