BOWIE, MD – The Department of Athletics at Bowie State University is proud to announce the launch of its first-ever NCAA-sanctioned golf program. The team will begin competition during the 2025-26 academic year. The addition of men's golf brings the total number of varsity athletic teams at Bowie State to 14 - six men's programs and eight women's programs.
"It is with great excitement that we officially move forward in sponsoring a co-ed NCAA golf program that will compete in the resilient CIAA," said Clyde Doughty, Jr., Vice President of Athletics & Recreation. "This initiative has been in development for several years, and I want to thank our dedicated golf committee for their hard work in bringing this vision to life. With Coach Edric Poitier at the helm, I am truly excited to see Bowie State University represented on the links this upcoming year."
The Bulldogs will compete alongside eight other golf programs in the CIAA under the leadership of head coach Edric Poitier.
"I'm incredibly excited to be part of this history-making opportunity! Having competed in the conference myself years ago, I understand the excitement and more importantly, the opportunities this provides for our student-athletes," said Poitier. "It's not just about playing the game; it's about learning the many facets of the golf industry. The possibilities are limitless, and I'm hopeful our students will take full advantage of what this opportunity truly represents. Not everyone will go on to play on the PGA Tour, but they can absolutely build a successful career within the golf industry."
Golf is offered by over 300 schools on the men's side and 240 schools on the women's side, with the NCAA Championships competed every spring.
