(BOWIE, Md.) Elizabeth City State's April Whitaker scored her only basket of the game with 0.05 seconds remaining in the game to lift the Lady Vikings to a stunning 72-71 victory over Bowie State. The loss, Bowie State's first in the division, dips the Lady Bulldogs record to 8-9 overall and 7-3 in the CIAA.
Elizabeth City State (3-14 / 1-9 in the CIAA) appeared to be a step up on Bowie State all night. Bowie State trailed the majority of the first half except for a brief 28-27 lead at the 2:14 mark. Following back-to-back Bowie State turnovers, Kearah Jefferys (12 points) and Shanna Faulkner scored back-to-back field goals to send ECSU's Lady Vikings into the half with a 31-28 advantage.
Bowie State connected on 12-of-35 field goals with Elizabeth City State hitting 14-of-34 field goal attempts. Each team made two first half 3-point field goals and committed 11 turnovers each.
Just like the first 20 minutes of the game, Elizabeth City State kept Bowie State at bay most of the final period as well. BSU senior
Denisha Kenion (Ft. Washington, MD, Oxon Hill) scored back-to-back lay-ups early In the second, giving the Lady Bulldogs only their second lead of the night at 34-33. Elizabeth City State responded with an 8-0 run the open a 41-34 advantage.

Brittney Jackson (Laurel, MD, Laurel) nailed a 3-pointer and a free throw and a lay-up and free throw by junior
Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, MD, Archbishop Carroll) tied the contest at 41, capping off Bowie State's own 8-0 run. Bowie State went cold again over a period of two plus minutes to fall behind 47-41.
Elizabeth City State held its largest lead of the evening (eight points) three times until a Lee trifecta pulled Bowie State within one at 64-63 with 3:33 left in the game. The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings held their lead until a pair of free throws by Lee shifted the advantage over to BSU's Lady Bulldogs at 71-70 with seven seconds remaining in regulation..
Following Lee's free throws, Whitaker received a pass from a Lady Vikings teammate, dribbled the ball to the free throw line and tossed up the game winner.
Briana Glover led all Elizabeth City players with a team-high 19 points and five assists. Ashley Anderson and Joyce Freeman chipped in 16 and 14 points respectively for ECSU.
Lee paced Bowie State with 19 points and Kenion added 12 points and tied her BSU career-high of 10 assists. Sophomore
Teaunsha Robinson (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) and Jackson chipped in 10 points apiece for the Lady Bulldogs
Bowie State will host St. Augustine's College in a CIAA match-up – Thursday, January 29th. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. in the A.C. Jordan Arena.
