(DURHAM, N.C.) Bowie State University and Elizabeth City State University are the co-leaders after the first day of the 2009 CIAA Women's Bowling Championships at AMF Durham Lanes on Saturday (March 21).
The Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Vikings are tied with 15 points apiece after posting 5-0 marks in team match play. Virginia State University is third with 12 points after winning four of five team matches while Saint Paul's College and Fayetteville State University are both tied for fourth place after recording 3-2 records.
The three-day tournament resumes Sunday (March 22) at 9:15 a.m. with cross divisional, all divisional and elimination baker matches before eight teams advance to the double-elimination bracket format.
Tycora Brown (Pocomoke City, MD, Pocomoke) of Bowie State University, named most valuable bowler, head the All-CIAA bowling team which was announced before the start of the bowling championships. The other all-conference members are Antoinette Bailey of Saint Augustine's College, Ria Sweeney of Livingstone College, Keia Marshall of Shaw University, Tiffany Ball of Saint Paul's College, Kayla Moore of Virginia State University, Tiffany Johnson of Elizabeth City State University, Akira Turner of Fayetteville State University,
Rebecca Frusciante (Mahopac, NY, Mahopac) of Bowie State University and Jessica Florit of Fayetteville State University.
The teams of Elizabeth City State University and Fayetteville State University received plaques during the awards ceremony for winning the CIAA Eastern Division and Western Division titles, respectively.
