(DURHAM, N.C.) Third-seed Bowie State University rolled 36 strikes in seven games to nip top-seed Fayetteville State University 4-3 Sunday to remain undefeated in the winner's bracket of the Baker double-elimination format at the 2010 CIAA Women's Bowling Championships at AMF University Lanes.
The championships conclude Monday with the quarterfinals starting at 9:20 a.m. followed by the semifinals and the finals. Bowie State will face defending CIAA champion Elizabeth City State, the No. 2 seed, in the winner's bracket. The winner of the Bowie State-ECSU match will advance to the championship round where it would need only one victory to claim the CIAA title. The elimination bracket features Fayetteville State against No. 6 seed Saint Paul's and No. 4 seed Virginia State versus No. 5 seed Johnson C. Smith.
In the first round of the bracket format, Fayetteville State beat Saint Augustine's 4-1, Bowie State downed Saint Paul's 4-0, Elizabeth City State defeated Shaw 4-0 and Virginia State topped Johnson C. Smith 4-2. In the winner's bracket, Bowie State stopped Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State topped Virginia State 4-1. In the loser's bracket, Saint Paul's eliminated Saint Augustine's 4-2 and Johnson C. Smith ousted Shaw 4-2.
Bowie State needed every one of its 36 strikes to get to the winner's bracket. The Lady Bulldogs collected 20 strikes between the 10th frame of the second game and the end of the fourth game to hold off the Lady Broncos. During that incredible stretch, the Lady Bulldogs recorded streaks of nine and eight straight strikes.
Fayetteville State earned the top seed earlier in the day for having the highest pin count after Baker matches. The Lady Broncos had a pin count of 8,238 while Elizabeth City State gained the second seed with a pin count of 8,027. Bowie State was third (7,793) followed by Virginia State (7,540), Johnson C. Smith (7,161), Saint Paul's (7,031), Shaw (6,406) and Saint Augustine's (6,307).
The top eight teams with the highest pin count qualified for the bracket format. Chowan, Virginia Union and Livingstone were eliminated. The seedings were tallied from a combined pin count of team match play on Saturday and Baker matches on Sunday.
