WILMINGTON DEFEATS BOWIE STATE 11-9 AND 7-3

(BOWIE, Md.) The Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University dropped its second consecutive non-conference doubleheader, losing 11-9 (8 innings) and 7-3 to Wilmington (Del.) University.

Bowie State senior Faline Brown (Inwood, W.Va., Hagerstown C.C.) led the Lady Bulldogs with three hits in three at bats in game one. Senior Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) and junior Shalai Tabor (Waldorf, MD, Delaware State Univ.) tallied a pair of hits each. Tabor played a major role in Bowie State's run total in the opening game of the twin bill, belting two home runs. Tabor laced a two-run rocket in the first inning and crushed a grand slam to left on the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Wilmington Lady Wildcats (9-11) out-hit Bowie State 17-10 in game one with Brooke Berger pacing the guests with three hits in three plate appearances. Six Wilmington players had two hits each and Kristin Garvin paced the Lady Wildcats with a team-high four RBI in the opening contest.

Wilmington (9-11-1) continued to hit Bowie State pitching well in game two, holding a 12-7 hit advantage. The Lady Wildcats opened up a 6-0 lead before Bowie State scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tabor recorded her 27th RBI of the season, scoring senior Elizabeth Slater (Glen Burnie, MD, Lenoir-Rhyne Univ.).

Freshman Kristen Lee (Germantown, MD, Northwest) hit her third triple of the season in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Brown and sophomore Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) and cutting the Wilmington lead to 6-3. However, Bowie State would get no closer.

Freshman Amanda Hedgepeth (Odenton, MD, Arundel) led Bowie State in hits in game two with two while Lee was the Lady Bulldogs' leading RBI producer with two.

Amanda Cordrey led Wilmington in the nightcap with a game-high three hits to go along with three RBI. Erin Tingle was the winning pitcher, striking out seven in five innings of work.

Bowie State University (11-16) will take a few days off before facing the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University in a key CIAA Eastern Division matchup in Ettrick (Va.) – Wednesday (March 31) at 2 pm.
