(CHESAPEAKE, Va.) Bowie State University opened the 2011-2012 women's bowling season with a second place finish at the Hampton Roads Invitational hosted by Norfolk State University. The North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles defeated the Lady Bulldogs four games to two to claim the top spot. NCCU had a total pinfall of 950 compared to 873 for BSU in the championship match.
The three-day event began with Baker Scoring as the Lady Bulldogs fell to Norfolk State by a total pinfall count of 770-585. Bowie State came up a little short in their next match as North Carolina Central edged BSU 667-605. The BSU Lady Bulldogs picked up its first win of the weekend, defeating North Carolina A and T State University 604-582. Bowie State split their final two matches on Friday, losing 622-599 to conference foe Elizabeth City State University 622-591 and defeated Chowan University 599-538.
The Lady Bulldogs started day two with three straight wins, beating Virginia State University (815-746), Chowan (832-657) and North Carolina A and T (781-740). However, BSU dropped its final two matches of the day, as Norfolk State and North Carolina Central defeated the Lady Bulldogs 854-713 and 799-734 respectively.
Junior
Quinn Armstrong led BSU with a 167.8 average on Saturday, rolling a high-game of 208 in the Lady Bulldogs match against Chowan. Freshmen
Ambrianna Bankston and
Shayla Lightfoot ranked second and third, in terms of team average. Bankston averaged 164.4 and had a high-game of 201 versus Virginia State. Lightfoot's high-game was 178 versus North Carolina A and T and averaged 161.6 on Saturday. Sophomore's
Ashanti Moore and
Cherelle Coombs wrapped up day two averaging 149.4 and 131.8 respectively against the competition.
Bowie State made it a clean sweep of North Carolina A and T, defeating the Lady Aggies 1,035 to 983 on the final day (Sunday) of Baker Match Scoring. The Lady Bulldogs kept the momentum against Norfolk State, beating the NSU Lady Spartans 1,124 to 1,060 to advance to the finals. Unfortunately for Bowie State, North Carolina Central squeezed out a 950 to 873 victory to capture the overall top spot.
