Bowie State Posts Highest Pin Count On First Day Of CIAA Women's Bowling Championship

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Northern Division champion Bowie State University has the highest total pinfall after the first day of the CIAA Women's Bowling Championship at AMF Western Branch Lanes on Friday, March 20, 2015.

Bowie State knocked down 4,075 pins in five team matches including a 968 score against Virginia Union University in the final team match. The score was the highest of the day, and it solidified the Lady Bulldogs' lead heading into Baker matches Saturday in the preliminary round at 9 a.m.

If the Lady Bulldogs hold on to their pin count lead after Baker matches, they will be the top seed entering the double-elimination Baker tournament, which starts Saturday at 3 p.m. The seedings for the tournament is based on total pin count in team matches and Baker matches combined in the preliminary round. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals in Baker tournament bracket play will be held Sunday, March 22, at 10 a.m.

Virginia State University is second with 4,054 pins and Saint Augustine's University is third with 3,871 pins. Elizabeth City State University is fourth with 3,863 pins and Southern Division champion Fayetteville State University is fifth with 3,739 pins followed by Virginia Union (3,558), Shaw University (3,502) and Johnson C. Smith University (3,361).

Bowie State was led by CIAA Rookie of the Year Sierra Davis and CIAA Bowler of the Year Shayla Lightfoot. Davis posted a 175.80 average and Lightfoot bowled a 171.80 average.

Davis was one of three Lady Bulldogs' bowlers who rolled a 200-plus score in the fifth match against Virginia Union. She led the Lady Bulldogs with a 223 score followed by All-CIAA bowler Keyandra Bankston with a 202 score and Lightfoot with a 201 score. All-CIAA bowler Ambrianna Bankston nearly rolled a 200 with a 193 score.

All-CIAA bowler Rebecca Clements of Virginia State bowled a 189.40 score which was the highest individual average in five team matches. All-CIAA bowler Brooke Roberts of Elizabeth City State was second with a 183 average and All-CIAA bowler Nicole Sciortino of Saint Augustine's was third with a 177.40 average. Roberts had the day's highest game score (233).
