CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The Bowie State bowling team began its 2017-18 season with a 2-7 record at the Hampton Roads Invitational over the weekend at the AMF Lanes.
The Bulldogs went 1-5 on Saturday and posted a 1-2 mark on Sunday, as they were joined by Morgan State, Norfolk State and Belmont Abbey. The teams competed against each other twice on Saturday, once in Baker play and once in traditional play, and against each other once on Sunday.
Morgan State totaled 7,592 pins in the nine games at the tournament to finish just ahead of the Norfolk State (7,524) to claim the tournament title. Both teams went 7-2 on the weekend. Belmont Abbey finished third (6,766) with a 2-7 record and Bowie State rounded out the field in fourth with 6,682 total pins.
Saturday saw Bowie State drop three straight matches, coming up short against Belmont Abbey (718-707), Norfolk State (779-609) and Morgan State (765—738) in Baker System Scoring.
Bowie State closed out Saturday's action with a win over Belmont Abbey (826-695) but lost to Norfolk State (807-785) and Morgan State (927-690) in Traditional play.
Then on Sunday, the Bulldogs started the final day of competition defeating Morgan State (813-784) before losing back-to-batches to Norfolk State (784-684) and Belmont Abbey (759-746) in Baker games.

Shannon Weaver (Fort Washington, Md.) led Bowie State's women with a 180.6 average and junior
Diamond Carter (Buffalo, N.Y.) ranked second on the team with a 168 average and a team high-game of 226. Sophomore
Bre'Ana Jones (Odenton, Md.) totaled 448 pins (140 average) while senior
Chantel Farlow (Columbia, Md.) averaged 145. Junior
NaVaughn Barnes (Clarksburg, Md.) rounded out Bowie State's competitors with a 123 average.
Bowie State will next compete in the Virginia Union Invitational from November 3-5.
