Bowie State Bowling Still in Hunt For CIAA Championship

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Bowling Championship continued today at AMF Western Branch Lanes. Total pin counts were calculated after each team played five Baker Matches to determine final championship bracket seeds. No. 1 Fayetteville State University, No. 2 Virginia State University, No. 3 Bowie State University, and No. 4 Virginia Union University each won their Round 1 matches of championship bracket play.

Fayetteville State and Virginia State traded places at the top of the rankings throughout Day 2 of the 2017 CIAA Bowling Championship. The Broncos and the Trojans competed in a Baker Match, when FSU outscored VSU 871-806. The Lady Broncos finished the first half of the tournament with a total of 8,423 total pins. Virginia State followed with 8,131 pins and edged Bowie State who scored 8,026 total pins.
Rounding out the rankings was Virginia Union (6,887 pins), Chowan University (6,806 pins), Shaw University (6,547 pins), Johnson C. Smith University (6,394 pins), and Saint Augustine's University (5,999 pins).

After five team matches and five Baker Matches, bracket seeds were set in the following order: No. 1 FSU, No. 2 VSU, No. 3 BSU, No. 4 VUU, No. 5 CU, No. 6 SU, No. 7 JCSU, and No. 8 SAU. One round of bracket competition was played before concluding another day on the lanes. Fayetteville State met Saint Augustine's while Virginia State met Johnson C. Smith. Both FSU and VSU finished the day with a victory after winning the quick 4-game match.

Bowie State was given quite the run by Shaw, but pulled through 4-2. The Lady Panthers also won their battle versus the Chowan Hawks, 4-1. The Falcons, Trojans, Bears, and Hawks all move to the consolation rounds of the double-elimination bracket.

Championship competition will resume tomorrow, March 26 with Round 2 at AMF Western Branch Lanes. Teams will hit the lanes at 9:00 a.m. Tomorrow's final championship match will be streamed live via YouTube (CIAA TV).
