Bowie State Athletics Recognizes Freshman Whitley Shields for Women’s History Month

BOWIE, MD — Bowie State freshman golfer Whitley Shields is making history at Bowie State University as the only woman on the Bulldogs' golf team and one of the few women competing in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). In honor of Women's History Month, Shields is being recognized by Bowie State Athletics for her trailblazing role in the sport.

"Making history as the first woman to compete on the men's golf team at Bowie State University is more than a personal milestone, it's a powerful statement about opportunity, inclusion, and the evolving landscape of collegiate athletics," said Interim Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Dr. Jolisa Williams. "Her presence in this inaugural season reflects the university's commitment to breaking barriers, empowering student-athletes, and setting a new standard for what is possible both on and off the course. It also serves as an incredible way to celebrate and conclude Women's History Month, honoring the achievements of women while actively creating new pathways and possibilities for future generations."

"Being one of the only women competing in a predominantly male sport, especially within the CIAA, means everything to me," Shields said. "I know I'm not just playing for myself, I'm representing women who want to be in these spaces too. It's bigger than golf, it's about making history and showing that we belong here just as much as anyone else."

Shields began playing golf at the age of nine through the First Tee of Greater Washington, D.C., and pursued the sport at the collegiate level to challenge herself and break barriers. "Bowie State gave me the opportunity to make history as the first female to sign and compete on the golf team, helping open doors for future women," she said.

Competing as the only woman on the team, and often the only woman at tournaments, comes with unique challenges. "There are moments where it feels like all eyes are on me, and I feel pressure to perform while also carrying myself in a way that reflects Christ," Shields said. She noted that competing from the same tee boxes as men is a disadvantage in distance and scoring, but she uses it as motivation.

Shields encourages young women who want to pursue sports in male-dominated spaces to be bold. "Go for it, even if you feel like you don't belong at first. You don't need permission to step into spaces that weren't originally made for you. Stay confident, stay consistent, and don't let fear or doubt stop you. I know I'm here for a reason, and I'm going to make the most of every opportunity God gives me."
