Seven Bulldogs Named All-Conference, George Named CIAA Player of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -  The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) announced the 2023 Softball All-Conference teams and superlatives as voted by the CIAA Softball Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association and this year's team is led by CIAA Player of the Year Lindsey George of Bowie State. Additionally, the Bulldogs softball team accounted for seven total All-Conference accolades, including four First Team honorees and three Second-Team recipients. 

A native of Fayetteville, Ga., George has been the top player for Bowie State this season, in the circle and hitting which resulted in the Player of the Year honor and First Team All-Conference selection. The two-way player has an ERA of 3.86 (8th in CIAA) and a 10-5 overall record. Her 10 wins are the most in the CIAA. She has appeared in 23 games and started 17 in the circle for BSU. George has combined for 90 strikeouts (2nd in CIAA), 18 batters struck out looking (2nd in CIAA) and one shutout victory in 102.0 innings of work (CIAA-high). In the CIAA, George is third for runs scored (35), fifth in runs batted in (29), fourth in hits (40), fourth in home runs (6), seventh in "at-bats" (109). George is the teams best hitter, averaging .381 with 29 RBI. 

Brewer earned First Team honors after leading Bowie State in putouts (157) which ranks third in the CIAA this season. The sophomore has been the most consistent first baseman for BSU in 2023 with a fielding percentage of .982 (8th in CIAA). Additionally, she has six assists and has only committed three errors in 32 games played and 26 starts. Offensively, the Savage, Md. native has upgraded her game with a batting clip of .333 to go along with 26 hits, four doubles, nine RBI, a triple and a home run as well as 21 runs scored.

Hill was named First Team All-Conference after closing out the regular season with rankings amongst the CIAA in runs batted in (40) CIAA-best including nine against Benedict (2/19), doubles (9) tied for 2nd, 42 hits (3rd in CIAA), 35 runs scored (4th in CIAA), 121 at-bats (3rd in CIAA), seven home runs (tied for 2nd in CIAA). She averages .350 at the plate and has tallied 39 RBI which is a team-best, eight doubles (team-best) and three triples (team-best). Defensively, at center field she has registered 36 putouts, six assists and fielding percentage of .913.

One of the top hitters in the CIAA, Pullen rounded out the First Team selections for Bowie State - her first career award. The Baltimore, Md., native had a batting average of .356 during the regular season. The two-way player has combined for seven home runs (2nd in CIAA), 38 hits (8th in CIAA), 33 runs batted in (4th in CIAA) and 31 RBI. In the circle, Pullen has an ERA of 2.99 (5th in CIAA), opposing batting average of .281 (9th in CIAA), 96 innings pitched (2nd CIAA), 43 batters struck out (8th in CIAA) and nine wins which is tied for second in CIAA.

As for Second Team All-CIAA,  former All-Tournament selection and graduate senior Aseyah Alexander has been battle-tested due to injuries, but has shown resilience for the Bulldogs at the shortstop position this season. She recorded a batting average of .317 with 19 hits, 20 runs scored, 12 RBI, including a double and triple during the regular season. The Silver Spring, Md., native has racked up 13 stolen bases which is 10th in the CIAA! Defensively, Alexander has combined for 25 putouts and 14 assists for a fielding percentage of .951. She was recently named the CIAA Offensive Player of the Week during Week 8 where she averaged .600 with 15 at-bat appearances, five runs scored on nine hits and four RBI.

Sophomore Kayla Evans earned Second Team All-CIAA for the second straight year - the Bridgeville, Del. native led the league during the regular season in runs scored (39) and stolen bases (35) - 13th in NCAA DII and 10th in the nation for stolen bases per game (.88). This season she has a batting average of .276 with 34 hits, a pair of triples and doubles as well as 21 RBI. Defensively, she is one of the top third baseman's in the CIAA with her skill set, she posts a .908 fielding percentage to go along with 63 assists (leads Bowie State) and second in the CIAA, 45 putouts in 119 chances.

Lastly, freshman Trinity Mizelle rounded out the Second Team honorees from BSU. The Woodbridge, Va., native has appeared in 39 games and started 32 with a batting clip of .256 during the regular season. The outfielder recorded 24 RBI, 22 hits, including four doubles and two triples to go along with 19 runs scored. Defensively, Mizelle has 30 putouts, four assists and a fielding percentage of .971. She earned CIAA Rookie of the Week on Apr. 4.

Bowie State was crowned this year's 2023 CIAA Regular Season Champions for the fourth time in program history. This season has been quite historical for BSU as the Bulldogs set a program record for most wins in a season concluding the regular season with a 31-13 record. Additionally, the 2023 campaign marked the second consecutive division title for the Bulldogs after posting a 14-2 record against conference opponents and 8-2 mark in the North under the leadership of Ed Powell.
